|
Neurologist Michael A. Williams, M.D., from LifeBridge Health in Baltimore, Md., will present testimony on hydrocephalus before the newly formed Congressional Pediatric & Adult Hydrocephalus Caucus on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., on September 23.
Williams, the medical director of The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute of LifeBridge Health and the director of the Adult Hydrocephalus Center at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, will serve as lead witness at the hearing, which is the first official meeting of the caucus. It is being held in conjunction with Hydrocephalus Awareness Day.
In his testimony, Williams will discuss the relative lack of research and awareness surrounding hydrocephalus. He will talk about his own findings, which highlight the positive cost and health benefits of hydrocephalus treatment. Williams will encourage the members of the caucus to work with their colleagues to promote the need for more funding for hydrocephalus research.
Hydrocephalus is a condition caused by abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within ventricles in the brain. Typically occurring in infants, it also affects adults as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), particularly the elderly. If left untreated, NPH can cause gait impairment, urinary incontinence and dementia.
Those suffering from this condition can receive treatment at the Adult Hydrocephalus Center at The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute, which provides internationally recognized expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of adults with hydrocephalus and related disorders.
